In the aftermath of forest fires, when the landscape lies charred and seemingly lifeless, one resilient plant emerges as nature’s first responder. Fireweed, with its vibrant purple blooms, transforms devastation into beauty. But this remarkable plant offers far more than aesthetic appeal. It also harbours a closet of healing properties that have been cherished for centuries.
Known by many names worldwide, such as Ivan Chai in Russia, rosebay willow-herb in Britain, and scientifically as Chamaenerion angustifolium (formerly as Epilobium or Chamerion angustifolium), this humble plant has served as a cornerstone of traditional medicine across continents.¹ From the indigenous peoples of North America to the tea traditions of Eastern Europe, fireweed has been revered not just as a pleasant beverage, but as a powerful therapeutic ally.³
Scientific research within the last decade has been validating what traditional healers have long known. Here is a quick summary of fireweed tea’s major health benefits, backed by both centuries of traditional use and modern science:

Nowhere is fireweed’s medicinal legacy richer than among the Indigenous peoples of North America. A survey of ethnobotanical literature confirms that its healing properties were well known across Canada and Alaska.12 The First Nations in northern Ontario used it to treat inflammation, burns, boils, sores, rashes, mouth ulcers, and yeast infections. Among the Cree, macerated roots were applied to boils or infections, and leaves were plastered on bruises. The Woods Cree of Saskatchewan prepared a tea from the whole plant to combat intestinal parasites, and crushed roots were used on abscesses and wounds. A poultice made from the leaves by Gwich’in people from Alaska was applied to burns, bee stings, aches and swelling caused by arthritis. In parts of Alaska and throughout the Arctic, a decoction of the herb was made to initiate breast milk secretion, while the Cheyenne of Montana applied a tea from roots and leaves to treat rectal haemorrhage.11 ¹¹
Across Europe, the flowers and leaves have long been used in folk medicine to treat stomach disorders, liver and prostate gland inflammation, and kidney and urinary tract diseases. Traditional applications in phytotherapy also extend to migraine headaches, insomnia, anaemia, delirium tremens, infections, and colds. Applied externally, fireweed has been valued as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic agent for treating mycoses, minor burns, skin rashes, ulcers, wounds, and inflammation of the ear, nose, and throat.11 While in Chinese medicine, the roots and stems are used to treat traumatic injury, reduce inflammation, and address menstrual disorders. American herbalist Michael Moore recommended fireweed for a range of conditions, including colic, chronic non-inflammatory diarrhea, gastroenteritis, vomiting, dysentery, and prostatitis.11 ¹¹
The earliest known mention of fireweed in European herbal literature comes from Nicholas Culpeper, the English botanist and physician, who wrote about its cooling, astringent and antispasmodic virtues in 1652. He also recommended the leaves brewed as a tea for asthma and whooping cough, likely recognizing what modern researchers would later find out. Later in 1716 in its dictionary of medicinal plants, French alchemist Nicolas Lémery described the use of its leaves for the treatment of wounds.
In Russia, fireweed tea is known as Ivan Chai and has been brewed since at least the 12th century, long before Chinese tea arrived in the country. Russian folk medicine credits it with calming the nervous system, supporting digestion, promoting restful sleep, as well as a common remedy for stomach ulceration and gastritis. It was also revered for its ability to restore stamina, balance hormones, and promote longevity. You can read the full history of Ivan Chai in Part 2 of this series.
However, it was an Austrian herbalist named Maria Treben who truly brought fireweed into the European spotlight centuries later. In the 1970s, Treben began championing the small-flowered willowherb (a close relative of fireweed, also known as Chamaenerion parviflorum) for urinary and prostate conditions, drawing on a personal story that had stayed with her for decades. As a young woman, she had watched her father-in-law die from an enlarged prostate. A neighbour knowledgeable in medicinal herbs later showed her the plant and told her that a simple tisane could have saved his life. That moment set Treben on a lifelong path of herbal practice.17 ¹⁷
Her experiences culminated in the 1983 publication of Health Through God’s Pharmacy, which was translated into 24 languages and sold over eight million copies worldwide. In it, Treben documented numerous cases of men with severe prostate and bladder conditions who found relief through daily small-flowered willowherb tea, sometimes even avoiding surgery altogether. Her work drew enormous public interest across Austria, Germany, and the rest of Europe, and played a pivotal role in bringing scientific attention to the fireweed genus (Chamaenerion). The pharmacological research that followed in the decades after her book would go on to validate many of her claims.17,18
Beyond its well-studied polyphenolic compounds, fireweed leaves are surprisingly nutrient-dense. The leaves, buds, and stem tips contain between 28 and 31% protein, an unusually high figure for a plant used in tea.¹⁰ According to USDA data, its fresh leaf mineral profile includes calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, and zinc, while vitamins A, B2, B3, and B6 are also present.¹9
The bioavailability of all these nutrients can vary depending on brewing time, water temperature, and processing methods. While fireweed tea is no substitute for a balanced diet, this nutritional foundation works alongside the plant’s bioactive compounds to support the therapeutic benefits that have made it a staple in traditional medicine for centuries. Nutrient concentrations can also shift depending on soil conditions, with plants from mineral-rich northern soils often producing a more potent end product.
Fireweed contains mucilages, particularly concentrated in the young spring shoots. Mucilages are plant substances that become slightly gelatinous on contact with water and are traditionally associated with a soothing effect on irritated mucous membranes
In the case of fireweed, they may help calm certain irritations of the digestive system, intestines, or throat, particularly when working together with the plant’s tannins. The mucilages form a kind of protective layer over the tissues, while the tannins help tighten and soothe inflamed mucous membranes.
Polyphenols are a family of compounds widely found in the plant world. They contribute, among other things, to colour, astringency, and part of the antioxidant properties of plants. The good news: fireweed is packed with those beneficial polyphenols, including ellagitannins such as oenothein B, flavonoids and tannins, which are responsible for the enjoyable mouth-feeling you’re looking for when drinking tea.
At the heart of fireweed’s therapeutic power lies a compound with an unusual name: oenothein B. Think of oenothein B as nature’s Swiss Army knife for health. It is one of the most studied compounds in fireweed because of its high concentrations in the plant. Often used as a marker of its biological activity, it contributes to several of the effects associated with fireweed, alongside other compounds acting in synergy.1,3,7
Oenothein B belongs to a family of polyphenols called ellagitannins, which are essentially nature’s powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Ellagitannins represent approximately 15% of the dry mass of fireweed herb, and oenothein B alone accounts for up to 50% of the total ellagitannin content in extracts.11,7 Depending on the plant’s geographic origin and when it is harvested, oenothein B concentration in the raw material ranges from 2 to 4.5%.11 What makes this compound special is the unique structure that allows it to interact with multiple systems in the body, providing benefits that range from reducing inflammation to better immune responses.
The composition of the leaves varies throughout the season. July corresponding to flowering, is associated with a high and relatively stable flavonoids and oenothein B. This is the time of the season where we harvest most of our leaves at Tea of the North.
But oenothein B doesn’t work alone. Fireweed contains an impressive supporting cast of beneficial compounds. It also contains flavonoids, another important group of polyphenols, including derivatives of quercetin, myricetin, and kaempferol.5 Among them, quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, also known as miquelianin, is considered one of the characteristic flavonoids of fireweed.11,3 These compounds contribute to antioxidant activity, but their role goes far beyond simply neutralizing free radicals. Flavonoids may help the body better regulate inflammation, influence enzyme activity, support circulation, and interact with the gut microbiota.
Fireweed also contains several phenolic acids, including hydroxycinnamic acids such as chlorogenic, neochlorogenic, caffeic, rosmarinic and p-coumaric acids, as well as other phenolic acids such as gallic, ellagic and benzoic acids.5 These molecules are associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, and several of them have also been studied for antimicrobial, vascular, metabolic and skin-supportive properties.
Taken together, these compounds help explain why fireweed infusion shows such a broad biological profile. However, these effects should not be attributed to a single molecule or a single mechanism. The activity of fireweed is better understood as the result of a complex phytochemical network, where ellagitannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and other compounds interact together and may be transformed during processing, digestion, and interaction with the gut microbiota. In other words, the effects of fireweed likely emerge from the synergy between many compounds rather than from one isolated constituent alone.
Part of what makes fireweed particularly interesting in herbal traditions is that its effects are not limited to a single organ or pathway. Instead, its compounds may influence several interconnected systems at once, including digestion, inflammatory balance, immune function, microbial ecology, skin health, urinary and reproductive function, oxidative stress, and nervous system regulation.
This broader influence is sometimes described by herbalists as an effect on the body’s “terrain” — the overall internal environment in which many physiological systems constantly interact together. When these systems are better supported and exposed to fewer stressors, broader and sometimes unexpected improvements in overall well-being may occur.
Like a skilled mediator in the complex organization that is the human body, fireweed helps the different systems to communicate better and thrive together.
For centuries, people have turned to fireweed tea when their stomachs are in distress. Traditional healers used it to treat everything from gastric and duodenal ulcers to gastritis, colitis, dysentery, and various forms of diarrhea¹˒³. What’s remarkable is how gentle yet effective this natural remedy proves to be historically.
The anti-inflammatory properties of fireweed work particularly well in the digestive system. Fireweed leaf infusions are described as demulcent (thanks to its mucilage) with mild astringency, meaning they soothe and coat irritated digestive tissues while gently toning them at the same time.¹⁰ This isn’t just folk wisdom. Studies have confirmed stating that polyphenols in general can help protect the stomach lining (gastric mucosa) and reduce inflammation throughout the gastrointestinal tract.¹
Fireweed’s gastrointestinal benefits extend beyond the stomach. Fireweed infusions, owing to their astringent, demulcent, and emollient properties, were recommended by American herbalists in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a highly effective treatment for dysentery and diarrhea of various origins, as well as other bowel disorders associated with infection, irritation, and inflammation.³
Benign prostatic hyperplasia, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, is one of the most common health concerns for men over 50. Traditional medicine has long turned to fireweed for prostate and urinary support, and modern research now explains why.¹
Fireweed contains compounds that inhibit 5-α-reductase, an enzyme that might cause prostate enlargement.¹ Studies have also shown that fireweed extracts can reduce prostate-specific antigen levels, an important marker of prostate health.⁹ For many men, these effects translate into improved urinary flow, less inflammation in the urinary tract, and fewer nighttime trips to the bathroom¹⁰. Ellagitannins such as oenothein B are thought to contribute to these effects, particularly through their influence on inflammatory and cellular processes.
Clinical research on fireweed remains limited but promising. In 2021, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial followed 128 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia who took either a standardized fireweed extract (containing at least 15% oenothein B) or a placebo daily for six months.²⁰ The treated group showed a significant improvement in their International Prostate Symptom Score, while the placebo group actually worsened slightly. Even more strikingly, the number of men needing to urinate three or more times per night was completely eliminated in the fireweed group, and the proportion of men not waking up to urinate at all increased by nearly 22%.²⁰ The researchers also found no signs of liver or kidney toxicity, confirming fireweed’s strong safety profile.
Fireweed is also described as having mild diuretic properties (like many other plants). While this may reduce frequency to pass urine in some individuals over time, responses can vary, and some people may temporarily experience a need to urinate more frequently.
One of the most exciting areas of fireweed research involves its effects on the immune system. As science continues to reveal the close relationship between gut flora and immunity, fireweed’s impact through its polyphenols is no surprise. Oenothein B has demonstrated a remarkable ability to modulate immune function, helping the body’s defence system work more effectively.¹
In laboratory settings, fireweed extracts have triggered apoptosis (programmed cell death) in several cancer cell lines.⁶˒⁹ The mechanism appears to work through the mitochondrial pathway, and oenothein B has also been shown to stimulate immune cells to better recognize and target abnormal cells.⁸ However, these findings come primarily from in vitro studies and cannot be directly translated into clinical effects in humans, thus more researches are needed.
Fireweed is exceptionally rich in polyphenols, compounds well known for their antioxidant power. But calling them simply antioxidants undersells what they do. Beyond neutralizing the free radicals that damage cells and drive aging, fireweed’s polyphenols work at a deeper cellular and enzymatic level, influencing the very processes that govern how the body responds to stress and disease.¹
Inflammation sits at the root of many chronic health conditions, from arthritis to cardiovascular disease. Fireweed stands out as a natural inflammation fighter, with studies demonstrating powerful anti-inflammatory effects throughout the body, largely attributed to its rich polyphenol content.¹ One compound in particular, myricetin-3-O-glucuronide, has been identified as especially effective, working by inhibiting the release of key prostaglandins involved in the inflammatory response.⁷˒¹⁰
These combined anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects may contribute to improvements in skin health and overall well-being. Some of fireweed’s individual flavonoids have also shown cardioprotective and neuroprotective potential in laboratory settings, while its anti-irritant and photoprotective properties have led cosmetic companies to incorporate fireweed extracts into anti-aging skincare products.¹˒¹¹ These findings are still largely preclinical, but they point to a plant whose therapeutic reach may be wider than traditionally understood.¹¹
Fireweed is not considered a sedative herb in the traditional sense. However, many people describe fireweed tea as calming and grounding, particularly when consumed regularly as part of a daily routine.
Rather than acting through a strong direct effect on the nervous system, its influence may be more indirect and systemic. Through the combined activity of its polyphenols, antioxidant compounds, and interactions with inflammation, digestion, oxidative stress, and the gut microbiota, fireweed may help support the body’s overall capacity to adapt to stress.
This type of broader physiological support is sometimes described in herbal traditions as an influence on the body’s “terrain” — the interconnected internal environment linking the nervous system, immune function, digestion, inflammation, and general resilience.
For some individuals, especially in periods of chronic stress, fatigue, or nervous tension, supporting these systems together may contribute to a greater sense of balance and overall well-being. This may be accompanied by reduced nervous tension, improved relaxation, better stress tolerance, muscle relaxation, or improved sleep quality.
Fireweed’s protective properties extend to antimicrobial activity as well. Studies have demonstrated that fireweed extracts can effectively kill harmful bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and inhibit the growth of Candida fungi.5,10 This confirms its traditional use by many indigenous nations as an antibacterial agent to disinfect wounds.
Interestingly, the activity of fireweed does not stop once the tea is swallowed. In the intestine, some of its larger polyphenols can interact with the gut microbiota — the vast community of microorganisms living in the digestive tract. Certain bacteria are able to break down compounds such as ellagitannins into smaller metabolites called urolithins, which may be easier for the body to absorb and use.
This means that part of fireweed’s activity may not come directly from the plant itself, but also from the way our microbiota transforms its compounds after digestion. These interactions may help explain some of the plant’s broader effects traditionally associated with digestive comfort, mucosal support, inflammation, and overall well-being.
Oxidation plays a crucial role in shaping fireweed tea’s potency and flavour profile. Like traditional teas from Camellia sinensis, fireweed undergoes enzymatic oxidation during processing, which transforms its compounds and impacts their bioavailability. This raises an important question: does oxidation reduce the beneficial properties of fireweed? At first glance, one might assume so. However, research suggests a more nuanced picture.
When fireweed leaves are simply dried in herbal tea (thus not oxidized), they tend to retain higher levels of certain native compounds, including ellagitannins such as oenothein B, as well as flavonoid glycosides like quercetin-3-O-glucuronide and kaempferol derivatives. These compounds are associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
However, controlled oxidation does not simply degrade these molecules. Instead, it leads to a series of transformations that modify the plant’s polyphenolic profile, by creating new beneficial molecules through enzymatic breakdown and reformation. During this process:
At the same time, studies have shown that certain compounds, such as gallic acid, ellagic acid, and in some cases oenothein B, may increase during oxidation depending on the conditions and duration of the process.
From a physiological perspective, these transformations may influence how the compounds interact with the body. Some of these oxidation products, particularly the smaller phenolic acids, may actually be more readily absorbed by the body than their larger parent molecules.
In summary, traditional Russian Ivan Chai processing involves partial oxidation, which creates a unique profile where some native compounds are preserved while others are transformed into smaller and potentially more bioavailable metabolites. This results in a tea that preserves a broad range of biologically active compounds, while developing the smooth, honey-like flavour that makes fireweed tea enjoyable to drink regularly. More research is needed though to better understand how controlled oxidation impacts fireweed biochemistry.

It is often suggested in herbal traditions that small-flowered willowherb (Chamaenerion parviflorum) may be more suitable than fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) for certain uses, particularly those related to prostate health. This idea largely stems from the writings of Maria Treben, who claimed fireweed had little medicinal value compared to its botanical cousin, which helped establish small-flowered willowherb as the preferred species in traditional use. Many now acknowledge that Treben was mistaken about fireweed.
More recent research, including studies by Granica et al. (2014), has examined multiple Chamaenerion species (formerly named Epilobium) and found that they share a largely similar phytochemical foundation.² Both are rich in polyphenols, including ellagitannins (such as oenothein B), flavonoids, and phenolic acids. The key differences between species are primarily quantitative rather than qualitative: they contain many of the same compound classes, but in different proportions. For instance, small-flowered willowherb has been reported to contain higher total ellagitannins, while fireweed often presents a more diverse flavonoid profile, including miquelianin (quercetin-3-O-glucuronide), and tends to show greater compositional variability depending on growing conditions and processing.
The current scientific evidence does not support the idea that one species is inherently superior to the other. Small-flowered willowherb might have been traditionally preferred in Europe, because it is more widespread than fireweed over there. While it is the opposite in North America where fireweed thrives, mostly in boreal regions.
According to numerous historical uses and modern studies, no contraindication has been found about fireweed.
The Herbal Medicinal Products Committee (HMPC) of the European Medicines Agency concluded that, on the basis of its long-standing use, fireweed:
As with tannin-rich beverages such as tea or coffee, fireweed may slightly reduce the absorption of certain compounds, including nutrients, medications, or supplements, when taken at the same time. This effect is generally modest and can be minimized by taking medications or supplements at a different time, ideally 1 to 2 hours apart from meals.
To be on the safe side, fireweed is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to the lack of available data.
Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, fireweed has lived many lives. The same species that heals charred forests after wildfires has quietly healed humans for centuries, from Indigenous communities across North America to folk traditions of Europe. What traditional healers understood through generations of practice, modern science is now beginning to confirm in the lab.
