Tea lattes have doubled in price over the last decade. Walk into most cafés today and you are looking at $5 to $7 for a single cup. The average Canadian spends over $600 a year on latte beverages alone!
Here’s the thing: you can make a better latte at home, for a fraction of the cost. Fireweed tea lattes are easy to prepare, taking ten minutes, a handful of ingredients, and you can customize them exactly to your taste. Developing your at-home barista skills will translate into hundreds of dollars in savings over a few years. And bringing your own thermos on the go is a simple, eco-friendly habit with a positive impact.
Fireweed Tea Latte
Serves 1
Ingredients:
- ½ cup strongly brewed Fireweed Black Tea (2g)
- ½ cup milk (cow milk recommended, oat milk second best)
- Honey or maple syrup to taste
Method:
- We like to use a 2-cup glass measuring cup. Add 2g of Fireweed Black Tea, ½ cup boiled water, cover and steep for 10 minutes, then strain. If you want an even stronger, more concentrated base, steep for 15 minutes.
- Heat your milk separately and froth if you have a frother handy, though it works just fine without one.
- Add the warm milk.
- Sweeten to taste with honey or maple syrup.
Which milk works best?
Cow milk is our top pick. The fat content brings out the natural roundness and fruity notes of fireweed black tea better than any other alternative. If you prefer plant-based, oat milk is the second-best choice. Almond milk is not recommended.
Want to make it even stronger?
Try adding a splash of fireweed tea syrup to your base before combining with milk. It deepens the flavour and adds a natural sweetness that works amazingly. We use the same syrup in a few of our cocktail and mocktail recipes.
